NZ Warmblood Stallion Star System & Upgrading

Stallion Star System and Studbook Upgrading

This system was introduced in 2019 as an easy way for breeders to see the performance aspect of a stallion and his progeny.

There is a clear pathway for a stallion to move up the ranks through his own performance or those of his progeny.

If a stallion is unable to achieve the performance testing results himself, he is able to achieve the Performance Test requirements by having 10 of his progeny meet the performance test criteria across any of the disciplines. These progeny must be registered with the NZWA or another Breed Association approved by the NZWA. It is the stallion owner’s responsibility to apply for upgrading and prove these results to the satisfaction of the NZWA Committee.

NB: It is envisaged by the NZWA that Performance Testing will become an absolute requirement for any stallion wishing to be licensed with the NZWA after 2025. A stallion will receive a ‘temporary license’ to breed after initial licensing, and then be given 12 months to complete the performance criteria relevant to that stallions age eg a stallion licenced at 3yrs of age in March would have to complete the criteria of a 4 year old in the following competition season.
